About Me

I am Nigel King,

Emeritus Professor in Psychology at the University of Huddersfield and a freelance Qualitative Research consultant.

I have used and written about qualitative methods for the best part of 40 years and still find myself fascinated by them and excited to have opportunities to guide others in their use. I am probably best known for my work on the thematic analytic approach known as Template Analysis  and for my writing on the use of interviews in qualitative research. I’ve also published widely on methods derived from the Personal Construct Psychology (PCP) approach and on visual methods.

However, I have a wide range of experience and expertise across methodologies and methods – I enjoy variety and learning something new!

What makes me qualified

I am the author of more than 100 refereed journal articles and book chapters, including both methodological and empirical work.

In addition I have co-authored five academic books:

My Expertise

What I Offer

I offer mentoring in any of my areas of expertise, to postgraduate students, early career researchers, or more experienced researchers interested in gaining knowledge of new fields. I have a deep knowledge of how the doctoral system works, especially (though not exclusively) in the UK, having supervised more than 30 doctoral students to successful completion, examined more than 50, and served for four years as Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Huddersfield. At present my mentoring services are exclusively online.

As well as mentoring, I can offer training in a wide range of qualitative methodologies, methods and issues. These include Template Analysis (and thematic forms of analysis more widely), interviewing, visual methods, phenomenological and PCP methods, ethics, and the philosophical underpinnings of qualitative research. I also offer short introductory courses on qualitative research. Sessions can be delivered either online or in person.

Finally, I am happy to provide research consultancy in qualitative or mixed method projects. My role could include helping to write bids and protocols, advising on data collection and analysis, or assisting with analysis – this is not an exclusive list though, so feel free to contact me with other requirements!
